Coconut Chicken Malai Curry is a traditional Bengali recipe where chicken is cooked with coconut milk and malai and has a silky smooth gravy.It is extremely flavourful and is a perfect lunch or dinner item to serve to guests on special occasions. - 400 gms chicken
- 2 onions chopped finely
- 1 tsp ginger paste
- 1 tsp garlic paste
- 2 tbsp coconut grated
- 1/2 cup coconut milk
- 2 tsp thick cream or malai
- 1 tbsp sesame seed paste
- 2 tbsp curd
- 1 tbsp tomato puree
- 2 cardamoms
- 1/2 inch cinnamon
- 4 cloves
- 1/2 tsp fennel seeds
- 2 bay leaves
- To taste salt
- 1/2 tsp sugar
- 1/2 tsp turmeric
- 1/4 tsp red chilli powder
- 1 tsp coriander powder
- 1 tsp fennel seed powder
- 1/2 tsp garam masala powder
- 3 tbsp mustard oil
- 1 tsp ghee or clarified butter
- 1 tbsp coriander chopped
Steps to make Coconut Chicken Malai Curry
- Marinate chicken with little salt,curd,black pepper powder for half hour.Meanwhile chop onions. Make a paste of sesame seeds alongwith ginger garlic paste. Grate coconut and set aside.


- Heat oil and lightly fry the chicken pieces. In the remaining oil add ghee and sprinkle half crushed whole garam masala and fennel seeds.When they sizzle, add the chopped onion and fry till golden brown.



- Add the wet masala paste, grated coconut and dry masalas.Add salt and sugar to taste. Add the chicken pieces and fry till oil leaves sides.


- Add malai or thick cream and keep frying. Add water and boil in medium flame till chicken is done. Add coconut milk and boil.Sprinkle garam masala powder and garnish with chopped coriander and green chillies.Serve hot with steamed rice,sweet pulao, roti or paratha in lunch or dinner.
